How to read an OBD2 code

Every code has five characters. The letter is the system: P powertrain, B body, C chassis, U network. A 0 as the second character means a generic code with the same meaning on every vehicle; 1 means a manufacturer-specific code. The third character is the sub-system (for P codes: 1–2 fuel and air, 3 ignition and misfire, 4 emissions, 5 speed and idle, 6 computer, 7–9 transmission), and the last two identify the specific fault.
