Maintenance schedule
How often common maintenance items are typically due. Use these as a guide; the interval in your service booklet takes priority.

| Item | Typical interval |
|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | Typically every 10,000–16,000 km (6,000–10,000 miles) or 12 months with modern synthetic oil; 5,000–8,000 km for older engines or conventional oil. Many cars have an oil-life monitor. |
| Tire rotation | Typically every 8,000–12,000 km (5,000–7,500 miles), often with every oil change. |
| Cabin air filter | Typically every 15,000–30,000 km or once a year; more often in dusty or polluted areas. |
| Engine air filter | Typically every 20,000–45,000 km (15,000–30,000 miles); more often on dusty roads. |
| Brake pad inspection | Inspect every 20,000 km or yearly. Replace when friction material reaches about 3 mm or the manufacturer's minimum. |
| Brake fluid | Commonly every 2 years, regardless of mileage; some manufacturers specify 3 years. |
| Wiper blades | Every 6–12 months. |
| Spark plugs | Copper plugs about 30,000–50,000 km; platinum and iridium plugs typically 100,000–160,000 km (60,000–100,000 miles). Check your manual. |
| Engine coolant | Long-life coolant often first at about 5 years / 150,000–240,000 km, then more often; older green coolant every 2 years. |
| Automatic transmission fluid | Varies widely: some manufacturers specify 60,000–100,000 km, others call the fluid "lifetime". Severe use (towing, hot climates) justifies earlier changes. |
| Timing belt | Typically every 100,000–160,000 km or 5–10 years, whichever comes first. Engines with a timing chain have no fixed interval. |
| Battery test | Test yearly once the battery is 3 years old. Most batteries last about 3–5 years. |
