P0140: O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

P0140 means O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 2). The oxygen (O2) sensor on bank 1 (the side with cylinder 1), sensor 2 (downstream, after the catalytic converter) reports how much oxygen is in the exhaust. The sensor signal stays nearly fixed instead of switching, as if the sensor were disconnected or inactive.

SystemOxygen sensor

TypeGeneric powertrain

Can I keep driving? Safe to drive short-term, but have it checked to avoid failed emissions or worse fuel economy.

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible worse fuel economy
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation (upstream sensor)
  • Can cause a failed emissions inspection

Possible causes

  • Aged or contaminated oxygen sensor
  • Exhaust leak near the sensor
  • Damaged wiring or connector
  • Actual lean or rich running condition caused by another fault
  • Engine computer fault (rare)

How to diagnose P0140

  1. Check for other codes (fuel trim, misfire, MAF) and fix those first.
  2. Inspect the exhaust for leaks upstream of the sensor.
  3. Watch the sensor voltage on a scan tool: an upstream narrowband sensor should switch quickly between about 0.1 and 0.9 V at warm idle; a downstream sensor is normally steadier.
  4. Check sensor wiring and connector; test signal and ground circuits.
  5. Replace the sensor only after confirming the engine is not actually running lean or rich.

Sensor 1 is before the catalytic converter (upstream) and is used for fuel control. Sensor 2 is after the converter (downstream) and is mainly used to monitor the converter.

Generic codes have the same definition on every OBD-II vehicle (petrol cars from model year 1996 in the US, 2001 in the EU; diesels later). Manufacturers can add their own enhanced codes; those are not listed here.

General guidance only. Fault codes describe what the engine computer saw, not which part failed: confirm with testing before replacing parts, and follow the vehicle's service information.
