P0562: System Voltage Low

P0562 means System Voltage Low. The engine computer sees system voltage below its expected minimum, usually a charging system or battery problem.

Have the battery and alternator tested together: a weak battery can make a healthy alternator look bad and the reverse.

Can I keep driving? Limit driving and diagnose promptly. Continued driving can cause damage, stalling or limp mode.

Common symptoms

  • Battery or check engine light on
  • Dim or flickering lights
  • Electrical systems acting up
  • Hard starting or stalling

Possible causes

  • Weak or failing alternator / voltage regulator
  • Weak or old battery
  • Loose or corroded battery terminals
  • Poor engine or chassis ground
  • Slipping or worn drive belt

How to diagnose P0562

  1. Measure battery voltage engine off (about 12.6 V when fully charged) and running (typically about 13.5–14.7 V).
  2. Clean and tighten battery terminals and grounds.
  3. Load-test the battery.
  4. Test alternator output and check the drive belt.

Generic codes have the same definition on every OBD-II vehicle (petrol cars from model year 1996 in the US, 2001 in the EU; diesels later). Manufacturers can add their own enhanced codes; those are not listed here.

General guidance only. Fault codes describe what the engine computer saw, not which part failed: confirm with testing before replacing parts, and follow the vehicle's service information.
