P0217: Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition

P0217 means Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition. Engine coolant temperature has exceeded the safe limit: the engine is overheating.

If the temperature gauge is in the red, pull over and switch off the engine as soon as it is safe. Driving an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head within minutes.

SystemCooling system
SeverityCritical
TypeGeneric powertrain

Can I keep driving? Stop driving as soon as it is safe. Continuing can cause severe engine or transmission damage.

Common symptoms

  • Temperature gauge high or warning light on
  • Steam or coolant smell
  • Loss of power (engine protection mode)
  • Heater may blow cold if coolant is very low

Possible causes

  • Low coolant from a leak
  • Thermostat stuck closed
  • Failed water pump
  • Cooling fan not working
  • Clogged radiator or debris in front of it
  • Head gasket failure pushing combustion gases into the coolant

How to diagnose P0217

  1. Stop and let the engine cool. Never open a hot radiator cap.
  2. Check coolant level and look for leaks.
  3. Check that the cooling fans run when the engine is hot or the A/C is on.
  4. Pressure-test the cooling system.
  5. Test for combustion gases in the coolant if overheating repeats.

PPowertrain0Generic (SAE) code2Sub-system17Specific fault

Generic codes have the same definition on every OBD-II vehicle (petrol cars from model year 1996 in the US, 2001 in the EU; diesels later). Manufacturers can add their own enhanced codes; those are not listed here.

General guidance only. Fault codes describe what the engine computer saw, not which part failed: confirm with testing before replacing parts, and follow the vehicle's service information.
