P0088: Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High

P0088 means Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too High. Measured fuel rail or fuel system pressure is higher than the engine computer commanded. Common causes are a faulty pressure regulator or control valve, a restricted return line, or a faulty rail pressure sensor.

Can I keep driving? Limit driving and diagnose promptly. Continued driving can cause damage, stalling or limp mode.

Common symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hesitation or loss of power under load
  • Hard starting or no-start
  • Stalling
  • Possible limp mode on direct-injection or diesel engines

Possible causes

  • Weak fuel pump or restricted pump pickup
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Faulty fuel pressure regulator
  • Worn high-pressure pump (direct injection and diesel)
  • Faulty fuel rail pressure sensor or wiring
  • Very low fuel level

How to diagnose P0088

  1. Confirm fuel level.
  2. Compare actual and desired fuel pressure on a scan tool.
  3. Verify with a mechanical gauge where possible.
  4. Check the fuel pump supply voltage and ground.
  5. On high-pressure systems, check the low-pressure supply before condemning the high-pressure pump.

Direct-injection and diesel fuel systems run at very high pressure. Do not open lines without following the depressurising procedure.

PPowertrain0Generic (SAE) code0Sub-system88Specific fault

Generic codes have the same definition on every OBD-II vehicle (petrol cars from model year 1996 in the US, 2001 in the EU; diesels later). Manufacturers can add their own enhanced codes; those are not listed here.

General guidance only. Fault codes describe what the engine computer saw, not which part failed: confirm with testing before replacing parts, and follow the vehicle's service information.
