P0524: Engine Oil Pressure Too Low
P0524 means Engine Oil Pressure Too Low. The engine computer has measured oil pressure lower than required.
Low oil pressure can destroy an engine quickly. Stop, check the oil level, and do not drive until real oil pressure has been verified.
Can I keep driving? Stop driving as soon as it is safe. Continuing can cause severe engine or transmission damage.
Common symptoms
- Oil pressure warning light
- Ticking or knocking noises from the engine
- Engine may enter protection mode
Possible causes
- Low oil level
- Wrong oil viscosity or very old oil
- Worn oil pump or clogged pickup screen
- Worn engine bearings
- Faulty oil pressure sensor
How to diagnose P0524
- Stop the engine and check the oil level.
- Verify oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.
- Change oil and filter with the specified grade.
- If pressure is really low, inspect the oil pump pickup and bearings.
What the code means, digit by digit
Generic codes have the same definition on every OBD-II vehicle (petrol cars from model year 1996 in the US, 2001 in the EU; diesels later). Manufacturers can add their own enhanced codes; those are not listed here.

General guidance only. Fault codes describe what the engine computer saw, not which part failed: confirm with testing before replacing parts, and follow the vehicle's service information.
