P0130: O2 Sensor Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0130 means O2 Sensor Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 1). The oxygen (O2) sensor on bank 1 (the side with cylinder 1), sensor 1 (upstream, before the catalytic converter) reports how much oxygen is in the exhaust. The control module has detected a fault in the circuit itself, such as an open circuit, a short, or a signal outside the electrical limits it expects.
Can I keep driving? Safe to drive short-term, but have it checked to avoid failed emissions or worse fuel economy.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible worse fuel economy
- Possible rough idle or hesitation (upstream sensor)
- Can cause a failed emissions inspection
Possible causes
- Aged or contaminated oxygen sensor
- Exhaust leak near the sensor
- Damaged wiring or connector
- Actual lean or rich running condition caused by another fault
- Engine computer fault (rare)
How to diagnose P0130
- Check for other codes (fuel trim, misfire, MAF) and fix those first.
- Inspect the exhaust for leaks upstream of the sensor.
- Watch the sensor voltage on a scan tool: an upstream narrowband sensor should switch quickly between about 0.1 and 0.9 V at warm idle; a downstream sensor is normally steadier.
- Check sensor wiring and connector; test signal and ground circuits.
- Replace the sensor only after confirming the engine is not actually running lean or rich.
Sensor 1 is before the catalytic converter (upstream) and is used for fuel control. Sensor 2 is after the converter (downstream) and is mainly used to monitor the converter.
What the code means, digit by digit
Generic codes have the same definition on every OBD-II vehicle (petrol cars from model year 1996 in the US, 2001 in the EU; diesels later). Manufacturers can add their own enhanced codes; those are not listed here.
