How often to change: brake fluid
Brake fluid: Commonly every 2 years, regardless of mileage; some manufacturers specify 3 years.
Your owner's manual or service booklet gives the interval for your car. Severe use, such as towing, short trips, dusty roads or extreme temperatures, usually means shorter intervals.
Why it matters
Brake fluid absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes the system from inside.
Signs it is due
- Dark fluid in the reservoir
- Spongy pedal after hard use
- Service reminder
