How often to change: engine oil and filter
Engine oil and filter: Typically every 10,000–16,000 km (6,000–10,000 miles) or 12 months with modern synthetic oil; 5,000–8,000 km for older engines or conventional oil. Many cars have an oil-life monitor.
Your owner's manual or service booklet gives the interval for your car. Severe use, such as towing, short trips, dusty roads or extreme temperatures, usually means shorter intervals.
Why it matters
Oil lubricates, cools and cleans the engine. Old oil loses its protection, and sludge damages turbochargers, timing chains and variable valve timing.
Signs it is due
- Oil-life monitor or service reminder
- Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick
- Low oil level
