How often to change: timing belt
Timing belt: Typically every 100,000–160,000 km or 5–10 years, whichever comes first. Engines with a timing chain have no fixed interval.
Your owner's manual or service booklet gives the interval for your car. Severe use, such as towing, short trips, dusty roads or extreme temperatures, usually means shorter intervals.
Why it matters
If a timing belt breaks on an interference engine, the valves hit the pistons and the engine can be destroyed.
Signs it is due
- Service interval reached (it rarely gives warning)
- Cracks or missing teeth on inspection
