UrgencyHigh
Can I keep driving? Limit driving and diagnose promptly. Continued driving can cause damage, stalling or limp mode.
Common causes
Burning oil
Oil dripping onto the exhaust, often from a valve cover gasket.
Hot brakes
A sharp, acrid smell after heavy braking or from a sticking caliper or applied parking brake.
Slipping clutch
Similar to hot brakes; happens when the clutch slips under load.
Burning plastic or rubber
A wire shorting, a plastic bag on the exhaust, or a slipping belt.
Sweet syrup smell
Coolant leaking onto hot parts, see overheating.
What to check
- Stop and look for smoke under the bonnet or at the wheels.
- Check whether one wheel is much hotter than the others (without touching the brakes).
- Look for oil leaks on the exhaust manifold.
- Check the fuse box for melted fuses if electrical.
