Squealing noise from the engine

A high-pitched squeal from the front of the engine, especially at start-up, when turning the steering or with the A/C on, is usually the accessory drive belt.

Can I keep driving? Safe to drive short-term, but have it checked to avoid failed emissions or worse fuel economy.

Common causes

Worn or glazed drive belt

Cracks, glazing or stretched belt slips on the pulleys.

Weak belt tensioner

Not enough tension lets the belt slip.

Failing pulley bearing

Idler, tensioner, alternator or water pump bearing; often a chirp or grind.

Fluid on the belt

Oil, coolant or power steering fluid contamination.

What to check

  1. Inspect the belt for cracks, glazing and missing ribs.
  2. Check the tensioner moves smoothly and holds tension.
  3. Spin idler pulleys by hand with the belt removed: they should be smooth and quiet.

Other noises problems

General guidance only. A qualified technician can confirm the cause; brakes, steering and fuel leaks should be checked professionally if in doubt.
