Engine cranks but won't start

If the engine turns over normally but never catches, it is missing fuel, spark or the right timing signal, or the immobiliser is blocking it.

AreaStarting & electrical
UrgencyModerate

Can I keep driving? Drivable with care. Diagnose soon: performance, economy or other components can be affected.

Common causes

No fuel

Empty tank, failed fuel pump, blown pump fuse or relay. Listen for the pump priming when you switch the ignition on.

No spark

Failed crankshaft position sensor or ignition fault.

Immobiliser

A security light flashing on the dash means the key is not recognised.

Flooded engine

Especially after short runs in the cold.

Timing belt or chain failure

Cranking sounds unusually fast and even. Do not keep cranking an interference engine.

What to check

  1. Check the fuel level and listen for the fuel pump.
  2. Look for a flashing security/immobiliser light.
  3. Read fault codes; crank sensor codes are common.
  4. Check whether the tachometer moves while cranking.
